Public fame + DMs — restrict who can message and duet your child

TikTok blends public video with private messages. Viral content can attract adult attention. DMs, comments, LIVE, and Duet/Stitch create multiple contact paths. Family Pairing exists but is optional — assume defaults favor growth, not privacy.

Settings to change now

  1. 1

    Turn on Family Pairing

Parent account links to teen account to control screen time, restricted mode, search, and who can comment/message. Set this up together so it is not a secret war.

    Private account for minors

  3. 3

Who can send messages → Friends only (or none)

Privacy → Direct Messages. Restrict to Friends or turn DMs off for younger teens.

  4. 4

Limit Duet / Stitch / comments

Privacy controls for Duet, Stitch, and comments prevent strangers from attaching to your child's content or flooding comments with predatory messages.
