Realms, servers, and chat — control multiplayer contact
Minecraft itself is a sandbox game. Risk comes from multiplayer servers, Realms, Microsoft accounts, and voice chat add-ons. Third-party servers can include unmoderated chat and adults posing as kids. Treat every multiplayer session as a social platform.
Settings to change now
- 1
Use Microsoft Family Safety on the account
Link the child's Microsoft account to Family Safety for screen time, purchase approvals, and multiplayer restrictions.

Multiplayer: trusted Realms only for young kids
Prefer private Realms with people you know offline. Avoid random public servers for under-13s.

Disable chat if they only need to build
On some editions and servers you can reduce or disable chat. If chat is required, play in the same room and review friends lists.

Voice chat mods / Discord companion
Many servers push Discord for voice. Apply Discord lockdown (see GuardBack Discord guide) or ban voice with strangers.

Review skins, usernames, and personal info
Usernames with real names, ages, or locations invite targeting. Keep identities generic.

Report the server host if known
Public servers often list Discord/report links. Still file CyberTipline for sexual exploitation of a minor.

- Account takeover / blackmail
- Your child is threatened or doxxed using real-world info
